The Gift of Life (GOL) program began in 1973 when a young Rotarian from the Manhasset, NY Rotary Club District 7250 responded to a plea for help from the Kampala Rotary Club in Uganda. Five-year old Grace Agwaru needed life-saving open-heart surgery to close a hole between the lower chambers of her little heart. Manhasset Rotary Club organized and sponsored Grace's treatment at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, NY. However, they also realized that their help to this little girl was a first step; there were more children in need of this medical treatment. Soon they sponsored a second child, then a third.© GOLI, Inc.
Today, GOL is a worldwide International Service Program. Its primary purpose is to help those needy children who require corrective heart surgery secure another lease on life, through the miracle of open-heart surgery in a Gift of Life participating hospital in the USA.© GOLI, Inc.
District 6630 became involved in this project in November of 2003. Since then our district has hosted 14 children at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland through the Gift of Life Program. Jim Frame, PDG (Past District Governor), and member of the Rotary Club of Mantua, is our district representative/liaison for Gift of Life.
Burton-Middlefield Rotary supports this international project. In the 2004-2005 Rotary year the BMR supported the District 6630 Medical Mission to Egypt. This medical mission sent a team of doctors and support staff to Egypt where they performed dozens of life-saving surgical procedures.
